>> harris: the atlantic hurricane season officially begins, 13 days from now. but at this hour we learn the first tropical storm of the year is forming off the u.s. coast. and president obama scheduled to depart for a major global summit in his home town and it comes with the windy city on edge. i'm harris faulkener, we are live as fox reports tonight. >> harris: disturbing details about what would be terrorists hope to achieve on u.s. soil. while president obama plays host to world leaders, this trio accused of planning attacks on a high profile target in chicago.

in minutes, what we're learning about the suspects nabbed in an elaborate sting operation. also... coming to america. the blinds chinese human rights activist who sparked a diplomatic dilemma is finding a new home in the u.s. and he did not come alone. and you have never seen a police chase like this before. did he just jump off that bridge? we begin with new developments in the case of three protesters arrested ahead of the nato summit in chicago. prosecutors now charging them with plotting to attack president obama's re-election headquarters. as well as other sites with incendiary devices, police arrested them on wednesday as part of a sting operation on chicago's south side and they found molotov cocktail, mortar gun, swords, assault vests and gas masks inside the apartment but the suspects claim the police informants brought en some of those items, a judge today ordering each man held on

a $1.5 million bond. of course this all happening as officials prepare to host delegates from 60 nations. they are meeting to talk about, among other things the war in afghanistan and a missile defense proposal in europe. and, europe's financial crisis also the big focus at another gathering of world leaders. the g8 summit, at camp david in maryland. but no word of this plot against high profile targets in chicago, overshadowing that event until tonight, chief white house correspondent ed henry is live in chicago and the president is set to arrive there in just a little while? >> reporter: that's right, harris, and, obviously, police here in chicago and the home town were already on high alert, with the secret service homeland security officials before the incident and you see the suspects now in custody and mentioned bond of $1.5 million, each, these are serious charges, of an attempted terror plot. in addition to targeting the mayor, rahm emmanuel, the former

president's chief of staff, they tried to target the re-election headquarters of the president as well as police and the state's attorney, who is prosecuting it said it was very very, serious, take a listen: >> these individuals charged today are self-proclaimed anarchists, who travel together from florida to the chicago area. their intent was to commit terrorist acts of violence and destruction during the nato conference. >> reporter: now, as you can imagine there is always a lot of security around these major summits. this is putting everyone on maybe a little bit of a higher alert though i can tell you there are parts of chicago that are all most like ghost towns, now because any time there is a summit like this, there is heavy security and protests, a lot of people end up getting out of town and so they are nowhere near it. >> harris: they can completely avoid the traffic scene, i imagine. let's get back to the g8 summit. a short time ago i was seeing an urgent wire they talked about greece in particular. and, the muddy me dy -- money m

europe. >> reporter: it is not just a crisis in europe, it is weighing down the u.s. economy and president obama knows that and he's concerned about the impact here and not just on the economy but, obviously on his re-election prospects and he's sitting down with world leaders, particularly angela merkel, someone who pushed for austerity measures and the president and other leaders say, okay, fine on austerity but they also want to see government spending in europe to try and spur growth there, here's the president a while ago at camp david. >> president barack obama: growth and jobs must be our top priority. a stable, growing european economy, is in everybody's best interests, including america's. >> reporter: to give you an idea of how serious the leaders are taking this, earlier today, when they were supposed to meet about the crisis that ended up going on longer by an hour and 20 minutes as they try to work through this. still no major breakthroughs but they are trying to show resolve

and when they come to nato, as you said, big, big security issues, such as trying to finish the mission in afghanistan. >> harris: i want to press in for a second on something i heard you mention earlier. and your wording was high stakes for the president with these gatherings. can you tell us a little more about that? >> reporter: absolutely. i mean, look, any time, he's able to show the power of incumbency, the fact that he is flexing his muscles on the word stage, if you will, from the g8 to here -- nato over the next couple of days shows the power of incumbency but there are pitfalls to that as well, which is as we mentioned at camp david, the european debt crisis, there is no easy way out there and there could be a real major impact on the american economy as well that could really hurt the president in the fall in terms of his re-election prospects and look at nato. the mission in afghanistan. the president said all u.s. troops are coming out by the end of 2014 and the new french president ran on a pledge to pull out all troops, the end of this year, two years earlier

than mentioned and our president has to make sure that doesn't unravel and there is a power to incumbency and a lot of challenges. >> harris: and a big reminder, it is all happening in an election year. ed henry, thank you very much. as we said, those three protesters in chicago facing serious charges and that is not the only trouble involving demonstrators, police have had to deal with there. our steve brown will join us live outside the chicago courthouse where the suspects were earlier today, coming up inside the fox report. within the hour we expect to hear from that blind chinese activist, remember? he sparked a diplomatic stand off when he escaped house arrest and hid out in or american embassy in that country. a plane carrying chin guanchen ge and his wife, this is video into fox news of him departing china earlier and he's here, ending a month of unternt that

tested relation between washington and beijing and it began when cheng sought refuge at the u.s. embassy there after escaping his home. authorities had turned it into a makeshift prison. cutting the human rights advocate off from the rest of the world. but now, again here, in the u.s., where he'll attend law school, we're told at nyu on a fellowship. doug mcelway is live in washington and, i understand they are already putting out the welcome mat. >> reporter: they are, after landing in europe, he's expected to go to manhattan where a welcome ceremony is planned at the new york university. where he'll be studying law as a fellowe, and, chinese authorities took him to the airport without telling him where she was destined and after his arrival, he and his wife and two children were provided passports and put on united flight 88 bound for newark and the deputy national security advisor reacted to his release

this morning. >> i think there was good work done by the state department in this instance and the white house, fully supported those efforts. and we are pleased this was able to reach a resolution. >> reporter: reaction from capitol hill, representative chris smith of new jersey put out a statement late today that reads, after years of enduring physical and psychological torture imprisonment and hate the man, cheng guancheng is finally free, america welcomes this extraordinary family with open arms and john mccain tweeting, great news, headed to u.s.a. and now must ensure relatives and associates in china are not harmed. a small sample of the kind of reaction we are hearing. >> harris: and i understand senator john mccain is not the only person concerned about potential harm to his extended family back in china? >> reporter: so true, in fact at the beijing airport this morning, he, himself said he was not happy about leaving and expressed concern about the

safety of his extended family in china and gained recognition for crusading for the disabled and fighting against forced abortion in his rural community and angered officials and he was convicted in '06 in what his supporters say was fabricated charges after serving four years in prison he was put under house arrest from which he escaped, precipitating the diplomatic stand off that appears to have ended with his arrival in the united states, tonight. harris. >> harris: doug, thank you very much. the n.a.a.c.p. throwing its support behind marriage equality, same sex marriage and they say, we support marriage equality consistent with equal protection builds the law provided under the 14th amendment of the u.s. constitution and, further, we affirm the religious freedoms of all people as protected by the first amendment.

>> harris: the first tropical storm of the season forming off the coast of south carolina. alberto, carrying top wind speeds of 45 miles per hour. the storm centered 140 miles off charlton and moving at 3 miles per hour at this point. right now, no coastal warnings or watches in effect, alberto is not expected to pose a serious threat to the mainland at this point. but, could bring rain to north carolina, the atlantic hurricane season, though, officially begins june 1st. also, right now, in the central plains and rockies. the risk of severe weather, storms producing large hail and strong winds possible into tonight from north texas to southern minnesota, tornadoes a strong possibility for kansas

and nebraska and we'll watch the system and bring news on that as it warn and from a super-soaker in the east, wildfires out west, hundreds of firefighters battling flames in several states. it started the beginning of last week and now, has just spread, arizona, first, the fire everyone has been watching so closely, the gladiator fire which began sunday and was burning this week in the historic mining town of crown king forcing 350 homes and businesses. people who live there and work there, to leave. the fire spreading to nearby pine flats, people there, packing up and clearing out. >> with this wind, it can travel. >> it brought emotion to me, going over the top, and looking at all of the smoke coming into the valley, right here. it is... it is really sad. >> harris: along with the fires in arizona, they are burning in california, nevada, new mexico, utah and, what you see here, colorado, the governor there

declaring a disaster, allowing $3 million of the state's emergency fund to be spent fighting the flames at this point. 45% contained that fire, this morning and then a break for them, rain falling in the region, right now, along with cooler temperatures moving in, both factors expected to help crews get that fire under control and adam housely is live in the west coast bureau and we know this is the season for this but one in particular in northern arizona is a beast. >> reporter: yes, it is. and the same area we saw last june, a year ago, almost exactly to the time there was a big fire up there and this near prescott, arizona and the problem they are having in such of the southwest is they have not had a lot of rain in a couple of years and the gladiator fire is a massive fire, the good news is, the winds have died down, considerably and the fire was fueled a lot by the wind and those winds work in favor of the firefighters and the homeowners of the small mining towns you talked about, blowing the fire in the other election, a day ago and, continues to burn in the other direction as the winds die

down and, a bit to the north and east, fort collins, colorado, the other fire, significant progress made there but, you are talking about massive firefighters, very early in the season, normally the fire season begins about june 1st and when you talk to evacuees who live in these areas, they'll tell you it is beautiful but it is also, they understand, a danger. take a listen: >> you just have to deal with it. it is beautiful up here, but, this comes with the territory. it is scary, because you know, we have friends, neighbors, you know, this is a tight community, right here. and, you know, i'm worried. i'm really worried about it. >> reporter: hundreds of firefighters remain on the line, in colorado as well as arizona. >> harris: i mentioned before this is kind of a season and i wonder if the experts look at this and say it is any kind of an indication what we are faced with this summer, perhaps? >> reporter: well, there are two ways of looking at it. yes. the season used to be from june

1st to the end of november and that change and talk to firefighters and they'll tell you it is pretty much year around and at the same time it is a warning sign because you had hey couple of dry years in parts of the southwest and california a couple of wet years followed by a dry year, a significant fuel built up and we had a chance to talk with cal fire and here's what they said about the possibility of a big one, coming this year. >> our focus now is to make sure that both our equipment and people are prepared for whatever comes to us this summer. you know, with two relatively quiet years we want to be sure our folks are keyed into being safe on the fire line and fight the fire aggressive and make sure they watch out for themselves and the safety of the public as they do that. >> reporter: the forecast again this summer is for long term forecast, from the weather casters and a lot of reports, it will be a dry summer for the southwest and california and that may not be good news, again

if we have significant fires to continue. >> harris: adam housely, watching all of that happening on the west coast for us in that division, thank you very much, we appreciate it. rescue crews in iowa spending the better part of their day searching for four people missing after two both boats crashed on the mississippi river, earlier this morning and officials say one boat was carrying 11 people, the other, just one person on board. rescuers pulled 8 out of the water. and those people are being treated at area hospitals, for their injuries, and, again, four missing and no word on what caused this to happen. apparently nobody told the count down guy the rocket was not going to launch. the abrupt development earlier today, catching i guess everybody by surprise. take a listen: >> 3, 2, 1... zero. and, lift off... we've had a... a cut off. lift off did not occur. >> harris: i don't think i ever saw that happen like that before.

you heard it right. the new private rocket, the rocket sitting there amid a cloud of engine exhaust. it was supposed to deliver cargo to the international space station and a spokesperson said the engine ignition sequence started and on board computers triggered a shut down and an engine pressure problem is the cause and, the next attempt is tuesday, if the glitch is fixed and this is the first launch attempt by a private company, hoping to deliver cargo to eventually astronauts to the space station for nasa. the major drug bust, a big achievement in its own right but, the suspects at the center of all of this that has people raising eyebrows, who they are and how their involve helped in the take down. take a look: g.

>> harris: police in michigan are searching for a fugitive who led them on a high speed chase and then escaped by jumping off a bridge into a river. that was nothing really that i could describe. you needed to see it. can we see it again? police say they tried to pull the man over on south standing warrants, this week, and, then he... when we show you, he was weaving through traffic and the chase ends at that bridge and the suspect, bolting from the truck. leaping over the edge. police say they believe he may be hiding with family in another state, authorities adding charges of eluding them to his rap sheet. police bust 40 people and seize $2 million worth of drugs in a massive bust, investigators saying it involved a single crime family in arizona. among those behind bars, a mom,

and six of her sons. police say the family was trafficking drugs from south of the border to their community and some of arizona's prisons, and rick moreno from ksaz with the story. >> reporter: the group of drug distributors brought down by various law agencies in the valley, they cracked the ring after watching the chandler family living off of dakota street. the family well-known by police for various run ins with the law. mom, grace and 8 of her sons, ricky, jonathan, vincent, daniel and angel, to same some and chandler police first tracked the family to downtown chandler where mom and her sons were allegedly selling cocaine and heroin. >> our investigators learned that this family was part of a larger organization. >> reporter: the detective says gang members smuggled cocaine and heroin from mexico into the valley and the drugs districted

>> harris: i'm harris faulkener, this is the fox report, bottom of the hour, time for the top of the news, three protesters in chicago, facing terrorism charges now, prosecutors saying they plotted to attack pretty high profile locations including president obama's re-election headquarters, police stations and even the home of the mayor. the arrest coming as police prepare for a two-day nato summit in the windy city and we're told thousands of people have taken to the streets, holding mostly peaceful protest and prosecutors believe these three men posed a serious threat. they are now holding each on a $1.5 million bond and steve brown, our correspondent live in chicago on the story. and, steve, i understand that they had federal assistance in rounding up these guys but actually it is a state terrorism charge they'll face? >> reporter: yes, state not federal and that is an important distinction, the state's attorney says to her knowledge it is the first time these charges will be employed against someone in the commission of a crime in the the view of the state's attorneys office.

according to documents submitted at today's bail hearing it was the intent of the three men arrested and charged to disrupt the nato meeting. >> specifically, plans were made to destroy police cars and attack four chicago police department stations with destructive devices in an effort to undermine the police response to the conspirators' other planned actions in the nato summit. >> reporter: the prosecution describes these three men as self-proclaimed anarchists, being somewhat aligned with a mutual called "black block" which uses tactics in a crowded event like a protest to try and disrupt the event and cause police headaches. back to you. >> harris: it is interesting, defense attorneys say that this was a complete police setup. what is the argument, exactly? >> reporter: well outside of the fact they acknowledge the prosecution got the names right

and the place where they were arrested correctly, they disagree with everything else. they were picked up in bridge for the, the south side of chicago on wednesday and keep in mind, again, had federal authorities working inside including folks that were undercover, and, it is a complete fabrication by police, this case, according to the defense attorneys. >> to discredit protesters that come to the city and make it seem like the police are under attack when people are peacefully protesting. >> reporter: the national lawyers guild of which mr. deutsche is a part of, has been watching this series of protests and watching the police and they have been, basically, here on hand in case something happened, they -- harris? >> harris: steve brown, thank you very much, and as g8 leaders are talking about ways to end the bloodshed, in syria, 9 more people there died in a car bomb attack outside a military compound. this is the latest, as you may know in a series of deadly

bombing, targeting security forces and the government blaming opposition forces and the rebels saying, no, the government is behind it and activists say the regime slaughtered thousands of its own people who demand a new government, you may remember, a cease-fire was supposed to begin in syria last month, so far, both sides seem to be largely ignoring it and back in our country, dozens of children recovering after a chain collision involving 6 school buses. in georgia police saying the buses were taking the children to a 6 flags theme park outside of atlanta. we're told one bus slowed abruptly because a lane was closed. that bus rear-ended triggering the chain reaction crash involving all the buses and a car. one bus driver had to be cut out of that wreckage. she was unconscious but able to speak to the rescuers, air-lifted to the hospital, we're told she's in stable condition at this hour, more than 50 kids were treat for minor injuries but none appears to be serious. family and friends say good-bye to a member of the

kennedy family today, mary kennedy, the estranged wife of robert kennedy, jr. laid to rest, the casket carried into a church in bedford new york by a group what included three children and one sister, and she was found dead of apparent suicide at her nearby estate earlier this week. her sister in law, carey kennedy said she battled depression and mental illness for many years, she was married to robert kennedy, jr. in 1994 and the couple has four children. he filed for divorcee couple of years ago and the case es pending. mary kennedy was 52. turning to the search for a missing little girl in tucson, arizona. it has been nearly a month and a candlelight vigil held for her and hundreds showing their support in a walk, she's 6 years old, reported missing by her dad

and, now he's agreed to child protective services limiting his access to the other children. the mom saying it is hard for the rest of the family. >> it is tough, we are under stress because we don't have -- to have more thrown on us, we are strong and we are -- we'll be okay. we'll survive it. we want her back. >> harris: police say the agreement with the child protective services does not mean investigators are focusing on the dad in the disappearance of the daughter. at least within person is dead and several other people hurt after a bomb explodes outside of a school. it happened minutes before classes were set to begin, it is our stop story as we go around the world in 80 seconds. italy... this video taken just moments after the explosion. witness says the bomb went off as students stood near the gates waiting to go inside. a 16-year-old killed. so far, no word on who is responsible. that school named after a murderous prosecutor who once took on the italian mafia.
